Shared Spaces Podcast: Episode 1 Space

December 3rd, 2008

Over the last few months, I have been interviewing the managers/facilitators/hosts/founders of coworking/shared spaces around the world.

In speaking with a friend about the podcast, I explained the amazing lesson was that all of these people sound like they’re describing the same place. In his subtle and knowing way, he responded: What I hear is that they are the same people. Either way you look at it, there are commonalities, and a general sense of optimism around these spaces.

So, the podcast release has begun. This first episode will introduce the people you will be getting to know over the next couple weeks. There are images in the podcast for your viewing pleasure. We spoke about the movtivations, inspirations, challenges, and surprises of seeing a shared space through its evolution. There are many insights and the experience was very eye opening.

I hope you find some good nuggets in here, and grow to love these great people, in wonderful places.

Story augmenting Function

March 8th, 2007

Experiences are about stories right? So if we’re in the business of experience design, how about leveraging some of the long known tricks of storytellers.

The Hero’s Journey is a classic archetype found in plenty of books/movies we all know and love, as well as other thoughtless renditions that feel cliche and thin. It provides a story arc that has a deep connection to the way people like to be told a story. There is something primal and familiar about the “Monomyth”, as it is sometimes called.

What’s especially interesting for our purposes is the start: How the hero is pulled from his/her everyday world and into a world they never new existed. Similar to signing up and experiencing an immersive social networking tool for the first time?

We’re going to find out by applying some of the guidelines of the Monomyth to our signup (or should I say “cross-over”?) and initial user-experience with Hive.

Call for your structure

February 26th, 2007

This is directed at Designers, Programmers, Project Managers, Scientists, Artists, or anyone else who has a lot of digital project files.

THE MOVEMENT is currently in the research phase of a (secret) project which could lead to a new non-linear method of organization. What we are looking for is the structures you currently use, and we’ve made it easy to show us.

Please download this script if your on a mac, or this program if your on a PC.

All you have to do is:

  1. run the script
  2. choose the folder containing all of your projects
  3. choose a new folder for the output file
  4. Make a zip of the newly created folder & contents
  5. send it along to truthstructures[at]thmvmnt.com with any explanation you can give as to the philosophy of your organization

The script simply copies the structure of your directories and not the files, as you may notice by the file size.

This project will help immensely since we are looking into new methods of organization. If you are so kind as to participate in this project, we will return the favour by sending you the results. An experiment of this kind really depends on people seeing the value of it and sending it to their friends. Please help this work, we need you!

Fair enough, almost over

January 8th, 2007

Here is an event in which we are participating.

Make a Big Noise for Make Trade fair is a great competition for anyone under the age of 30. They’re looking for a brilliant idea for a ‘Make Trade Fair’ campaign. Basically anything goes - they’re just lookin’ for something that uses non-traditional media methods and maybe it’s something that’s never been done before. They want an idea that will reach as far and wide as possible, be effective and potentially make the world a fairer place - we can only but try:)

The idea will be brought to life with the help of some of the greatest talent on the planet :)

Check out the competition website anyway - download the brief and find out all you need to know. www.makeabignoise.org

You can ask questions on the site, or here on Myspace. Good luck :)
